Duha Amara’s Story - A Journey of Love with Sewing

29 May 2016

‘To produce the highest quality work’ was Duha’s motto while completing a sewing course conducted by the Jordan Red Crescent Vocational Training Centre. Learning alongside other Jordanian and Syrian women, Duha not only completed the requirements of the course, she completed her work to a very high standard, gaining admiration for her excellence and dedication to the training.

Duha graduated with the final group of the Women’s Empowerment Programme of 2016. Throughout the year she attended the training, she has developed skills in weaving, patching and embroidery. But her true passion has been realised with her sewing machine training.

Duha was introduced to the Jordan Red Crescent by her friend, and was attracted by the programs that were offered to women. She joined the Centre after finishing high school, and began her journey with the trainers who are, in her words “my sisters”. She has had the opportunity to be trained in the establishment of small projects, meet other people from a range of backgrounds and experiences, and gain knowledge from them. She says this experience has helped her develop as a person.

Now the training has completed, Duha has great ambition to start a small business with a group of other women, continuing to improve her skills and creating her own independence. She knows it will be a long road to success, but she is ready to work step by step to achieve her dream.

Duha thanks the Jordan Red Crescent and the Vocational Training Centre for the vital they play in helping Syrian refugees and the local community to develop, through their programmes and projects. She has been inspired by the work of JRC, and hopes to join as a volunteer in the future.

H.E Dr. Mohammed Mutlaq Al Hadid, the President of the Jordan Red Crescent Society, praised the staff at the Centre for their unlimited help in teaching and training the girls in a variety of professions. He applauded Duha’s diligence, and encouraged other trainees to follow her example. He wished her all luck and success.
